Baking cupcakes like nobody's business
When the housing market took a wallop, two real estate colleagues found a recipe for sweet success in a totally different field: making gourmet cupcakes.
"We're two years strong, doubled our sales last year," said Joe Barbato, the non-baking half of the mix at Frostings Etc. "If you make it four years, you're strong."
Business partner Sharon Tabasco, he is quick to point out, "is the creative genius behind the whole company." And it was also her persistence that sparked the mom-and-pop business two years ago.
"He thought I was crazy," Tabasco said.
"She was bugging me for months and months," said Barbato, convinced it was a viable recession-proof business only after a batch of her cupcakes were a huge hit at a party. "People were freaking out," Barbato said
With years of experience as a venture capitalist, broker of real estate, mortgages and stocks, Barbato, 52, applied for a Small Business Administration loan, tossed in his last $25,000 and borrowed the balance from his father.
How the Internet Made Shopping Easier
Think of a day when you shopped in the stores in your local town. You usually buy clothes that resembled those of other people in your community and you did not think twice. Prices for clothing were comparable to other stores and you do not consider that there were other stores and goods in other cities. Sometimes a trip to the city would justify a new outfit or clothing. However, it was not planned and it was always a treat. For the most part, everyone was very happy to have clothes in their local towns and cities.
It is almost hard to remember these days and if you're young, you can not remember at all....
Off the Rack: June Fashion Highlights at Marshalls - The Budget Babe
Earlier this week I went to Marshalls to check out what's in store for summer. I often recommend shopping off-price retailers like T.J.Maxx and Marshalls one department at a time so you don't get overwhelmed, so this time I hit the clearance racks first. I saw some new-to-my-Marshalls brands appear including Joe's Jeans, Lipsy London (a UK brand that I've seen recently at Bloomingdales) and New York & Co. (not designer, but very inexpensive), plus a few others that I've seen before like BCBGMAXAZRIA, Theory (oh yes), DKNY, and Lucky Brand. I also spotted some nail polish for the very first time by Nicole for O.P.I. - hope to see even more polish in the future. If you shop with an outfit or trend in mind, you're sure to find cute things at Marshalls...
