After rain delay, Ohio River Sweep cleans up on riverfront
A week after rain and winds postponed the operation and twisted their command tent into trash, the 2011 Vanderburgh County River Sweep cleaned up Saturday.
In three hours, about 175 volunteers in boots, sneakers, long pants, colorful T-shirts and black gloves clambered over the rocky riprap and combed shoreline between the Evansville Museum and Casino Aztar, to pick up enough debris and trash to fill most of a 20-cubic-yard Dumpster.
By 11 a.m., they’d loaded it up with an array of items, ranging from the usual suspects — plastic bottles, aluminum cans, old shoes, shoe parts and flip-flops — to larger items, including a dock ladder, a car tire and rim, a fiberglass fishing and casting reel and a plastic pool liner.
Vanderburgh County’s River Sweep, part of an annual effort that extends along the Ohio from Pennsylvania to Indiana and Kentucky, was supposed to happen last week, but organizers called it off here because of severe weather.
Terri Carl, the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility compliance manager in charge of the county’s effort, pointed to the tent awning set up for Saturday’s cleanup. “When I came down here last week, it was a pretzel,” she said. “It was twisted and turned and we had to actually dispose of it.
