Ryan House brings care to children, parents
The 14,000 square feet of downtown Phoenix facility can accommodate eight children and three families at a time. It has a pool, play area, sensory room, activity space and full-time medical care.
Children stay at Ryan House - sometimes with their families but also their own - while parents enjoy a short break. Respite stays are allowed for up to 28 days of use per family per year. End of life care is not limited by a number of days.
"We let kids be kids, and we let the family have a little time down. Families can stay here as many times as it takes for them to get comfortable," said Simons."The qualifying factor is that they (children) must have a life-threatening. Most will not do it past 20. Most will not do nearly three."
About 80 families are on waiting list for Ryan House, which is already booked for the rest of the summer.
"There are 4,000 children in Maricopa County who could benefit from a stay at Ryan House," said Simons. "We have about 200 families in our rotation. But there are so many families that could benefit Ryan House.

In this childrens' room from Period Living , four twin beds with a little space for access in between are lined along one side of a large bedroom. At the foot of each bed is a chair (each housing an individual stuffed animal) and a white metal garbage can. We presume the cans are for either laundry or toys. Add the matching striped bedding and big teddy bears to the rhythm and we're in love!
