Owners of Checker cars hold convention in Springfield
More than a dozen "Checkerheads" arrived at Springfield on Thursday, the Checker Car Club of America launched its first national convention in the capital.
"We are part of the" Checkerhead "family," said Robert Bartel of Springfield, who considers it one of the three car owners in Springfield Checker. "These are real people. They love their cars like we do."
The club celebrates automobiles made by General Motors Checker, best known for the manufacture of the iconic yellow cabs.
Bartel and his wife, Janice, visited with conventiongoers as they stopped at the Chatham Railroad Museum as part of the tour group exits Route 66 Thursday.
Earlier that day, the caravan of 11 vehicles stopped at the Museum Shea Checker Gas Station on Peoria Road and The Cozy Dog Drive In South Sixth Street. Today the club is scheduled to visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and the Lincoln Home National Historic Site.
