Where many people might see ugly, artist Cheryl Ekstrom sees eleganance

What many people might see as ugly, artist Cheryl Ekstrom perceives as elegant. Ever since she was in seventh grade, Ekstrom had to stand up for her beliefs that an old rusty tool, a wooden handle salvaged from a farm implement, or a dug up thingamajig, has character and is worth enjoying, let alone be reborn in a new sculptural work. In her latest exhibition – "The Elegance of Ugly" – at the Art Cube Gallery, Ekstrom not only exhibits her latest sculptures, but she also turns the gallery into a replica of her studio. The show is pure innovation, an unorthodox art show everyone will enjoy.

Ekstrom displays an assortment of sculptural forms and knickknacks she created and loves. They hang, dangle, and swing from the ceiling and walls. Piled up are remnants that convey her passion for the history of objects, some whose purpose is now forgotten. To replicate her studio, she includes her massive wooden cabinet with glass windows, filled with bits of plaster, metal, clay or wood remnants from various processes that, for Ekstrom are too good to toss. The artist tells how people are mesmerized by going through these discarded treasures, rummaging through them much like archeologists.
